Professional Development - CantBeatTheExperience.com

Altria’s companies provide a variety of training and development opportunities ranging from job specific training to function and departmental experiences to company-wide events. Employees in Altria’s companies participate in the Performance Partnership Process with their managers. A key responsibility of the partnership is to formulate, agree on and complete development objectives that will enable each employee to enhance contributions in his or her current role and potentially advance to other roles in the employee’s career plan.

Examples of functional-level development programs:

New sales representatives in Altria Sales & Distribution attend TERRITORY SALES MANAGER FOUNDATIONS in their very first week to learn how to support Altria's mission, how to apply company values and selling skills, how to make sales calls and to learn about company products. This is followed by Field Foundations, which covers the Quality Call Process, the 5 P’s, Territory Planning, Category Management and Game Planning. Later still, Territory Sales Managers attend multiple leadership development programs.

The ENGINEERING LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM provides selected engineers with Altria Client Services a fast-track, cross-functional, career development program designed to cultivate leadership capabilities. Many participants begin the program as interns or co-op students. Full-time participants complete three stages of development designed to enhance their engineering skills while learning leadership principles. The program is intended to prepare engineers for future managerial and/or technical leadership positions. In addition, successful advancement through each stage leads to a series of promotions over the four-year program.

Examples of enterprise-wide developmental programs:

DISCOVERY DAYS is a two-day program for new full-time employees. Led by senior leaders of the Altria family of companies, Discovery Days provides participants in-depth explorations of the Mission, the Mission Goals and the Values, while allowing the opportunity to establish networks with employees in other functions and companies.

THE LEADERSHIP JOURNEY FOR NEW MANAGERS program is a week-long experience for newly promoted managers, and managers who are new to the Altria family of companies. The purpose of the program is to deepen participants’ understanding of the Altria Group Leadership Model and leadership responsibilities. It is led by experienced leaders from across the organization and provides managers a unique opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills.

THE EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP FORUM is designed to fan the flame of emergent leadership within Altria’s companies and to provide the fuel to keep it burning in every leader. Specific program objectives include:

  • Engaging a sense of commitment, personal challenge and constructive collaboration
  • Creating an environment where senior managers and directors can have a stimulating conversation about leadership
  • Helping participants develop a thorough understanding of their unique roles and the connection of those roles to the Altria Mission
  • Enhancing participant understanding of the Altria leadership model and its relevance to the successful execution of their unique roles
This program is typically offered annually to newly-promoted employees at senior manager and higher grade levels.
